about
Recipient of the 2012 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Kathryn Salfelder has received commissions from Boston Musica Viva, the Albany Symphony, the United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C., and the American Bandmasters Association. In addition, ensembles like the Minnesota Orchestra and the Dallas Wind Symphony have performed her music. In Fanfare and Fugue, Salfelder extrapolates her name into a combination of pitches derived from solfége and letter names, as follows: Sol A/La Fa E La D E Re—a technique famously used by J.S. Bach. This sequence of pitches becomes the fugue subject, which is heard midway through the piece. Written in traditional prelude and fugue form, Salfelder unifies these two sections in the coda to close this haunting work.
